Over the years our policy makers have expressed "great concern" over the matter, but very little has been done as statistics show. In fact it’s as if the more concern they show the worse it gets.
As at 2006 the unemployment rate was at 12% of the working age population, and by 2011, Unemployment rates in Nigeria stood at 23.9% with youth unemployment rate at over 50%, this means that at that particular year 50% of the graduates produced by Nigeria where jobless.
so lets do the maths Nigeria has over 60 Universities graduating at least 5000 people yearly(some uni's graduate much more than this figure and some Uni's graduate less so working with this figure as an average)
60 universities X 5000 graduates = 300 000 graduates this figure does not capture people graduated from Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, Monotechnics
This means that as at 2011, at least 150 000 fresh graduates where unemployed. This really scares me, it is even scarier to learn that as at the 2012 the figure grew by 2.3% and still we are yet to witness massive employment directed policies.
1.
Why can’t foreign companies in Nigeria be given a
quot-er of Nigerian expected of them to employ.
2.
Why cant the retirement age be reduced, it really crazy
that a country with employment challenges would be increasing retirement age.
3.
Interest Rate for start up business could be lowered.
4.
And social securities can be set up for the unemployed.
But day after day billions are invested on unproductive causes, like the 1
billion used for “peace and women empowerment” jamboree. Yet millions of our Youths
waste away daily with no means of livelihood, some of whom are the hope for a
better life for their family. So as youths what do us then do, do we fold our hands and wait and pray for a better future, or pursue a post graduate degree for those that can afford one .Recently some schools have adopted screening exercise for its post graduate programs thus making it more exclude able.
So I ask why would crime rates not increase, like they say the idle man na devil workshop,So since most our fathers have failed us,is it not up to us to provide for our sons and daughters the better Nigeria we wish for,2015 approaches the choice is ours to make, and the consequences ours to bear. These are my Thoughts,Please share yours.
